Head and Neck Surgery Top Rui P. Fernandes, M.D., D.M.D., FACS, FRCS Chief The division of head and neck surgery in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is dedicated to providing the finest care for our patients. To that end, our faculty strives to be on the cutting edge of the surgical management of head and neck cancer as well as in our reconstructive procedures. Patient Care Our goals are to provide the best possible surgical outcome and to improve the quality of life for our patients. The head and neck tumor board fosters an interdisciplinary approach to treatment. The board consists of surgeons, radiation oncologists, neuroradiologists and speech pathologists who are dedicated to the care of head and neck patients. Weekly meetings are held to discuss cases and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan. The faculty also work with community physicians to provide excellent care for patients with head and neck cancer and those needing complex reconstructions. More on Patient Care Services Education Our faculty are involved in training post-doctoral fellows in all aspects of head and neck surgery as well as complex microvascular reconstructive surgery. The division of head and neck surgery supports graduate medical education training in the department's ACGME-accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, as well as our CODA-accredited head and neck oncologic surgery and microvascular reconstruction fellowship. View Division Faculty Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction Fellowship Research We strive to improve the care of head and neck cancer through collaborative basic and clinical research projects. The department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is active in and supportive of resident research. All residents will participate in at least one research project, either of a clinical or laboratory bench nature. The opportunities available in Jacksonville are so varied that almost any research interest can be pursued. The research elective is supported by federal, state and private funds.
